Community Awards & Activities

Shira Aronow ’21 is the recipient of the 2021 Howie Stillman Young Leadership Award. The award recognizes the leadership and personal qualities of a high school senior active in a Twin Cities' synagogue youth group or BBYO.

More than 40 MS students participated in the Virtual Polar Plunge (reimagined as an ice bucket challenge) for Special Olympics Minnesota. US leaders and volunteers with the Unified Committee helped make this event and a special program with YouTubers Squirmy and Grubs possible.

100 Days, 100 Cans: See photos of Highcroft’s collection of 2,090 food and essential items weighing in at 2,424 pounds in support of Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners. The kindergarten classes spearheaded the effort in celebration of the 100th day of school.

The US Global Connections Committee, led by Bailey Abraham '21, Natalie Sabes ’21 and the Equity Lab, hosted a virtual Books and Bingo event for LS students featuring Sarojini ’29 and her father, Hindolo. Participants played bingo, read books, learned about Blake's connections to Mondema, Sierra Leone, and made bookmarks for a Sierra Leone Foundation for a New Democracy library project.

Maggie Seidel '22

Maggie Seidel ’22 received the Edina Community Foundation Connecting with Kids Award for Student Leadership. Maggie was nominated by Julie Huck, volunteer services manager at the Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery, for her volunteer commitments to the nursery and for teaching English to a student in Rwanda.

Maddie Hsia ’23, Anna Johns ’21,  Amanda Ward ’21, Chef John Sugimura  and Nicolle Thomas

US Hunger Committee Chairs Maddie Hsia ’23, Anna Johns ’21 and Amanda Ward ’21 organized an online cooking class through the Equity Lab with Chef John Sugimura, a corporate chef with Taher and owner/founder of PinkU. Taher Food Service Director Nicolle Thomas and other Blake Taher staff members joined the class to teach more than 40 Blake community members how to make gyoza, Japanese dumplings. The event raised over $900 for EveryMeal.
