Arts
Arts education is essential to Blake's curriculum.
At Blake we view all students as emerging artists. Our young artists develop abilities and habits of mind that complement their learning across the curriculum. They communicate ideas, using all available tools. They analyze and respond to others' creative efforts. They create, revise and reflect on their work to solve aesthetic problems while learning patience and resilience.
Beginning in kindergarten Blake students have classes in visual arts, music and theatre. In the Middle School students participate in an ensemble music class (choir, band or orchestra), in addition to Theatre, Wood Studio and Visual Arts. Upper School students may choose from 14 different electives in visual arts, theatre, debate and music. Some choose to pursue a single subject in depth, while others sample the breadth of courses offered. Students need a minimum of two years of arts to fulfill graduation requirements, although most students choose to take more.
