Cyrus Extra: Partners for a New Democracy
Posted 04/29/2019 05:15PM

The Blake community flexed its collective artistic muscle on Legacy Day to create colorful banners and illustrated books for Dovalema, an early childhood center in Sierra Leone founded by one of Blake's service partners, Sierra Leone Foundation for New Democracy (SLFND) The banners, which each bear the name of a Dovalema student, now hang in the center's new school building, a reminder of the relationship they share with students half a world away.

Blake's relationship with the SLFND began in 2016 when Service Learning and Community Engagement Director Lisa Sackreiter and SLFND Founder and Executive Director Hindolo Pokawa P'29 met at a Blake student-led fundraising event. Pokawa, who is from Sierra Leone, created SLFND to build local communities by empowering them to part of the solution to the challenges they face. As a partnering organization, Blake students and teachers have visited Sierra Leone, getting to know people in some of the villages as part of this immersive experience.
