2019 Hersey Summer Sabbatical Announced
Posted 03/04/2019 03:57PM

Lower School engineering and programming teacher William Watkins has been named the recipient of the 2019 Hersey Summer Sabbatical.

Now in his thirteenth year at Blake, Watkins intends to use the sabbatical to dive into the process of writing and illustrating his first children's book. Although he is a formidable digital artist, Watkins has never taken any formal art classes. The sabbatical stipend will fund several online learning experiences, as well as software and hardware purchases to support his project. In the process, he hopes to bring to life children's stories that teach about history and cultural competence.

Hersey Summer Sabbaticals "are awarded to faculty members who represent the high level of teaching effectiveness at Blake. It is hoped that these sabbaticals will allow the recipient to develop an interest which, without the award, would be difficult to pursue. The term sabbatical is used here in the broadest sense and includes, but is not limited to, academic work, curriculum study, and travel."
