Social Entrepreneurship: How Doing Business and Doing Good Combine

The world of work is reinventing itself, with start-ups galore and entrepreneurial adventures. However, a new mindset has also infiltrated the up-and-coming generation. Many of today's entrepreneurs care about social, cultural and environmental issues, as well as turning a profit. The intersection is called social entrepreneurship.

During this dynamic, experiential workshop we will:

· Define social entrepreneurship — what it is and why it matters
· Clarify by examples — hear from local social entrepreneurs
· Develop the ability — articulate the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed for creativity, possibility and change
· Examine the "five elements of effective thinking" — dive into the Starbird/Burger model for thinking broad and wide as a means to effect change
· Find out how — the Five Stages of Service Learning model will provide a step-by-step process to invite students into firsthand experiences with being social entrepreneurs
· Connect with a worldview — draw on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to make connections with real issues

This workshop includes copies of "The Complete Guide to Service Learning," handouts that are easy to use with colleagues and students, and a resource of books that strengthen academic connections.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be primarily on-campus, and Thursday will be a day to connect with social entrepreneurs and related opportunities in the community.

Established through a generous endowment gift from Raymond Plank, Blake School class of 1940, the Plank Summer Institute brings together a group of educators to study and participate in discussions with local business and industry leaders. Teachers, administrators, teaching assistants and school leaders from public, private, charter and independent schools across all academic disciplines and levels are welcome to apply. There is no registration fee, and meals, materials and bus transportation will be provided at no cost to participants. Verification of clock-hours is available.
