Chub Bettels Scholarship Fund

Rowland "Chub" Bettels was a much beloved Blake coach and junior school social studies teacher from 1954 to 1974. Chub believed strongly that athletics play an important role in the lives of students. He valued sportsmanship, honor, pride and dedication and worked to instill those qualities in all of his young athletes. Upon Chub's death in November 1991, members from his former track teams joined forces to carry on his work of encouraging young people to achieve their full potential through the Chub Bettels Scholarship Fund.

Established in 1992, the Bettels Scholarship Fund has become the largest multi-donor fund in the School's history. The Fund benefits students with financial need at The Blake School, providing an annual scholarship to one or two designated Bettels Scholars. Recipients of the Bettels Scholarship are Upper School student-athletes who exhibit the qualities Chub encouraged and taught - honesty, pride, leadership, and being a participant rather than a spectator in both academics and athletics. Students are nominated by Upper School faculty and staff, and selected via an interview process by members of the Bettels Scholarship Committee.
