Philanthropy 101: Giving at Blake

The Blake Community plays a vital role in supporting the tradition of academic excellence that has long defined a Blake education.

Philanthropic support from alumni, parents and grandparents allows Blake to offer dynamic curriculum, outstanding faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, engaged parent and alumni communities and a highly motivated and diverse student body.

Philanthropy is a key component to top independent school operations, and Blake is no exception. The Blake Board of Trustees strategically sets tuition at approximately 85 percent of the real cost to educate a student. Every year, gifts to the Annual Fund, combined with funds from Blake’s Endowment, provide an additional $3,000-$4,000 investment per student to the operating budget.

Below is a brief outline of four major ways the Blake community supports the school.

Blake is grateful to have an endowment valued at approximately $60 million (as of June 2015). Endowment funds are invested to provide a solid and sustainable foundation that positions Blake for a secure future. Each year, the Board of Trustees determines the annual draw — the percent of the total endowment used. These drawdown funds are both donor restricted and unrestricted and are used to support an array of needs, including school operations, faculty professional development and student financial assistance.

Annual Fund

The Annual Fund makes it possible to provide 30 varsity sports, a robust theater arts program, a nationally ranked debate program, engineering and programming (starting in Lower School), 10 diverse singing and music groups, 40 student-led clubs, and LearningWorks, Blake’s largest service-learning and community-driven initiative, and much more. Without the Annual Fund, tuition would have to increase to cover the cost of these enriching and critical offerings.

For accelerated and large-scale improvements to school facilities and programs, Blake, like other top independent schools, relies on multi-year comprehensive fundraising campaigns. Campaigns make it possible to build and renovate facilities, significantly increase student financial assistance, augment faculty programs and make other meaningful investments that align with our school’s vision and strategy. Blake's current comprehensive campaign, Excellence Accelerated: The Campaign for Blake, launched its public phase in the 2016-2017 school year.

Our hope is that every family feels inspired to make Blake a philanthropic priority. One-hundred-percent parent giving reflects a healthy, caring and committed community. Most importantly, it ensures that Blake continues to provide students with a transformative educational experience.
