Water Project Reaches Beyond Blake

A project spearheaded by the Upper School Community Service Board (CSB, pictured at right) last year is making a difference in a community in Bogotá, Colombia today. The Bennett Gallery exhibition Water: Blake and Beyond featured the artwork of Blake students from all divisions and other community members. The CSB organized the show and hosted a gala during which the artwork was auctioned off; proceeds from the event supported Impact Lives in its efforts to install water filtration systems in Bogotá.

Blake received word that the student-led effort to raise funds inspired other donors — enough to make a new water well a reality for one community. The new filtration system provides clean potable water at a low cost and implements vocational training in entrepreneurship, which in turn provides families with an income and better access to health care services. It also supports other vital programs that help with issues like child exploitation, sex trafficking, drugs and gangs.

A plaque honoring the donors that made the new well possible will be placed outside the building that houses the filter. It will include The Blake School and Justin Gainsley '18, who initiated the CSB project and worked closely with Impact Lives.
