Remembering Don Mezzenga

Don MezzengaThe Blake community mourns the loss of beloved former science teacher and coach Don Mezzenga, who died on Aug. 6 at age 88 in Beaverton, Oregon. Mr. Mezzenga's family, including sons Christopher '72 and Scott '77, welcomes former students and colleagues to a memorial on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 1 to 3pm in Blake's Bovey Chapel. Read his obituary and tributes to Mr. Mezzenga from former students published in 2000 in the book "Treasures in Our Lives: A Celebration of Our Teachers."

Author and Hemingway scholar Scott Donaldson '46 celebrates the release of his 20th book. "The Paris Husband" explores one of the key events in Hemingway's life — his first marriage to Hadley Richardson — and his years in Paris in the early 1920s.

Janet Weiner Rowles '77 is a professional mediator specializing in high conflict and emotionally difficult situations. Her new book, "The Tell Me More Gesture: How and Why to Welcome Conflict," helps readers self-manage — and even welcome — conflict.

Betsy Aldrich '85 won the 2018 Minnesota Golf Association Women's Senior Amateur Match Play Championship at Faribault Golf Club.

Laura Gabbert's '85 2015 documentary "City of Gold" — about Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold — was named one of the 66 best documentaries of all time by Vogue.

Brian Lucas '86 has launched a new business. True Voice Communications provides consulting, storytelling and coaching services to organizations and individuals.

The New York Times featured Dean Phillips '87 in a story about political candidates who refuse to accept PAC money. Phillips is running for U.S. Congress in Minnesota's Third District.

Sara West Wold '95 was appointed district judge in Minnesota's Fourth Judicial District by Gov. Mark Dayton '65.

CNN anchor Poppy Harlow '01 interviewed classmate and Stitch Fix CEO Katrina Lake '01 on a recent episode of her podcast, Boss Files.

Classes of 1955 Speaker Announced

Kao Kalia YangAuthor Kao Kalia Yang has been selected as Blake's 2018-19 Classes of 1955 Speaker. She will visit the school in April to work with faculty and students; the wider community will also have opportunities to hear her speak and discuss her work.

Minnesota 9-11 Tribute Annual Concert

Erik Aamoth '90 will speak at this year's Minnesota 9-11 Tribute Concert on Tuesday, Sept. 11 from 5 to 8:30pm at the Lake Harriet Bandshell in Minneapolis. He will honor his brother Gordy Aamoth '88, who worked in the World Trade Center in New York and was killed in the attacks of 9-11.

Breakfast with Head of School Dr. Anne Stavney

Dr. Anne StavneyBreakfast at Blake: Head of School Edition is Thursday, Sept. 13 from 7:30 to 8:30am at the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis. Dr. Stavney will discuss five significant opportunities, challenges and emerging issues she sees in PK-12 education nationally and among leading independent schools. As Blake addresses these issues, what do we share in common with other educational institutions and how do we differ? How do these five areas inform Blake's priorities and goals in the coming years? Dr. Stavney's presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. This complimentary event includes a hot breakfast. Register by Thursday, Sept. 6.

Blake Alumni Biennial Call for Submissions

Alumni artists are invited to submit their artwork to the Blake Alumni Biennial. The show's opening reception is Thursday, Dec. 27, in conjunction with the Alumni Holiday Party. The exhibition will be on display in the Martha Bennett Gallery of the Upper School through January and will include a gallery talk with students on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Please contact Bill Colburn '88 if you plan to submit artwork and send him your artist website for use in show promotions. Visit Blake's website for more information.

Alumni Board Nominations Due Oct. 20

Nominations for Blake's Alumni Board are welcome year-round, but considerations for the 2019-20 board close on Saturday, Oct. 20. Board members can serve up to two three-year terms and all alumni in good standing are eligible.
