Plank Summer Institute

The 41st Plank Summer Institute for Educators: Local Businesses of Immigrant Entrepreneurs
with Lisa Sackreiter and Julie Rogers Bascom
June 22-24, 2021
9am-3pm

The Twin Cities has a robust immigrant entrepreneur community. Visit immigrant-owned businesses, opportunity centers and partnering organizations geared to immigrant entrepreneurs during this year's Plank Summer Institute for Educators. Learn about the importance of these businesses to the local economy and community and the networks that support them. Hear personal stories that include challenges immigrant entrepreneurs face, values they hold, impacts the pandemic has had on them and successes they celebrate. Participants will be invited to reflect on how their experiences increase their cultural self-awareness, deepen their understanding of people from different communities and reveal ways to bridge differences. Enjoy good food and fellowship along the way.

COVID safety measures that adhere to Minnesota Department of Health recommendations will be in place.

Registration is open. Sign up to attend one, two or all three days of this summer institute for educators. Professional development clock hour certificates will be granted according to participation hours.

There will be an option to take a bus from Blake's Northrop campus (511 Kenwood Parkway in Minneapolis) to community partner sites or provide your own transportation. Participants will spend most of the time out in the community.

Tuesday, June 22—on and near East Lake Street in Minneapolis

Wednesday, June 23—St. Paul, mainly Eastside

Thursday, June 24—Cedar-Riverside area of Minneapolis

From 2019 Plank Summer Institute participants:

“The whole idea behind the Plank Summer Institute, to give teachers a chance to learn and experience, is a great way to inspire and help them recharge.”

“I am grateful for a chance to view the world in my own backyard under the care and guidance of leaders who have thoughtfully considered the impact an educator can make.”

“Every time I attend this workshop, I always know that I am going to get something out of it. It is a transformative experience each time. Thank you for stretching my mind…”

Established through a generous endowment gift from Raymond Plank, Blake School class of 1940, the Plank Summer Institute brings together a group of educators to study and participate in discussions with local business and industry leaders. All PK-12 educators are welcome to apply. There is no registration fee, and meals, materials and bus transportation will be provided at no cost to participants.
