Bear Pause: Tyler Libert '19

Tyler Libert

When he’s not teaching computer science to Blake Middle School students, Tyler Libert ʼ19 can be found playing video games or with his dog (often both at the same time). He loves watching documentaries and playing chill games.

Q: Name five things that make you happy
A: 1. My dog Pickle
2. My best friend
3. Video games
4. Watching documentaries
5. Riding bikes fast

Q: What is your proudest achievement?
A: Being here today. I choose to use every day to spread bits of happiness wherever I can because I am glad to be here and I want others to feel that way too.

Q: What did you want to be when you were small?
A: A teacher. I wanted to be a high school teacher at first, but I taught at Breakthrough Minneapolis at Blake and found my passion for working with middle school students.

Q: If you could live in a different country for a year, which country would you choose?
A: Canada. I would live in a rural area near the mountains in a tiny home with dogs, cats and other pets.

Q: What is the best gift you have been given?
A: My e-bike. My mom gifted it to me, and I have used it almost every day since. Whether to get to work, for fun or to bike to my friend's house—it is one of the best parts of my day getting to go fast on it. I like going over jumps. I feel really calm when I am biking fast and can feel the wind on me.

Q: If you could take one prop from any movie set, what would it be?
A: I would take Alan Grant's hat from Jurassic Park. His hat would give me a lot of confidence, and I would feel very cool.

Q: Would you rather explore a new planet or the deepest parts of the ocean and why?
A: Deepest parts of the ocean. More specifically, I would love to explore the deepest shipwrecks. I find them fascinating, and there has to be more deep shipwrecks we haven't found.

Q: When was the last time you were nervous?
A: I'm nervous every single day. I can't think of when I am not nervous. But the best advice I can give that I do my best to follow every day is: Do it scared.

Q: If you could live inside any sitcom, which one would it be?
A: “Modern Family.” I love this show, and it is the first show where I saw people like myself on TV.  I also think it would be okay because a lot of the humor comes from misunderstanding/lack of communication. That would make it much more manageable to live in.

Q: What is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning?
A: What video game I want to play first or if I can press the snooze button.

Q: Where do you find inspiration?
A: History. I find inspiration in the past and the incredible actions people have taken to make the world a better place.
