Steve Slovick ‘84 owns a successful global consulting firm, which allows him to live and work from nearly anywhere. He and his family — wife Mindy and sons Stratton (9) and Sterling (6) — split their time between Key Largo, Florida, and Sun Valley, Idaho, where they can take advantage of great weather and outdoor activities. Last year, the foursome circumnavigated the globe, hitting 30 countries and learning along the way. They plan to make another lap later this year. Q: It’s been said that everyone gets 15 minutes of fame. What happened during your 15 minutes?
A: I was a contestant on “Love Connection.” The date didn't go well.
Q: If you could visit any place in the world, where would you choose to go and why?
A: Why pick just one? I'm interested to see as many different places as possible, meet the people, eat the food, learn about the culture and history — and then help to pass the knowledge to my kids to make them better world citizens.
Q: What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
A: Jimmy Buffett. I've actually seen him perform more than 100 times in at least 14 states and in three different countries.
Q: If you had a theme song, what would it be?
A: “Margaritaville,” of course.
Q: What is the best gift you have been given?
A: My wife and kids. They are the greatest gift, and they weren't easy to get. After waiting years to find the perfect match, we went through years of IVF and are super happy to have two wonderful boys with whom to share our lives.
Q: What do you miss most about being a kid?
A: Looking back and also while watching my own kids, I really appreciate the overall low level of responsibility, no need for monthly budgeting and being generally naive about world issues.
Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Just passport stamps (65 countries and counting). I've long been in a competition with one of my former British colleagues. Every year, we compare notes and make recommendations on great places to visit. Right now, I'm recommending Morocco, the Seychelles and the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador.
Q: If your life were a book, what would it be titled?
A: "A Propensity to Succeed." Over the years, I've started, run and divested a number of businesses. I don't believe success has much to do with luck but rather getting out there, working hard, working smart and making good things happen to the people around you.
Q: If you could have an endless supply of any food, what would you get?
A: Buffalo-style chicken wings
