Bear Pause: Peter Ankeny '07

Peter Ankeny

Peter Ankeny ʼ07 lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with his partner, Maddy, their two samoyeds (Tiki and Goose) and their cat (Stella). Peter recently left a multi-family office to start his own wealth management firm, Wolf Pine Capital. In his spare time, he enjoys skiing, cycling and jiu jitsu.

Q: Name five things that make you happy
A: My perfectly curated YouTube algorithm, riding my bike downtown before people wake up, a new hobby, first tracks on perfect corduroy, and bringing my dogs to Home Depot

Q: What are the three values you treasure most in a friendship?
A: Punctuality, initiative in planning (and following through) and spontaneous phone calls

Q: Aside from necessities, what is one thing could you not go a day without?
A: Wool socks. My feet are shot from years of freezing in ski boots, and wool socks keep me right in the comfort zone.

Q: What piece of advice would you give your 16-year-old self?
A: Slow down. Taking the shortcut is often the longest road.

Q: Is there anything you wish would come back into fashion?
A: Cargo shorts. More pockets = more fun.

Q: What are the top three items on your bucket list?
A: Driving on the left side of the road (legally), raising backyard chickens and skiing in Japan

Q: What is your favorite travel hack?
A: Always carry on your ski boots. TSA doesn’t love it, but I haven’t been stopped yet. You can rent all your other equipment if your bags get lost, but finding comfortable boots in a pinch is impossible.

Q: What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
A: Tenacious D, and it’s not even close.

Q: What’s your dream job?
A: I am living it now. I love helping people and teaching about my passions. Being in control of my own schedule allows me to work from anywhere and gives me the flexibility to attend all my cousins’ weddings (there are a lot of them).

Q: What is the most surprising thing about you?
A: I’m a closet nerd. I love technology and mechanical things. I must know how everything works.

Q: What book has influenced you greatly? How?
1) “The Millionaire Next Door” by Thomas Stanley. This was the book that kicked off my obsession with personal finance. I had just finished engineering grad school when I read this book, and it snowballed into a total career change.
2) “Digital Minimalism” by Cal Newport helped me be more present and focused. Turning off all notifications on my phone has been life changing. Try it!

Q: If your pet could talk, what would they say?
A: Goose would say, “You are my hero, and I am the luckiest dog in the world.”
Tiki would say, “You shouldn’t be a dog owner.”
Stella and I aren’t on speaking terms.
