Q: Name five things that make you happy
A: Spending time together as a family, traveling, reading a good book, listening to music (live or recorded) and watching movies
Q: If you could live in a different country for a year, which country would you choose?
A: France would top our list. We love the food and wine, the history, the people and the architecture. There’s so much to see beyond Paris (which we love, too) and we’re always excited to go back. But we have many places on our bucket list that we'd at least like to visit: the Seychelles, Japan, the Galapagos, South Africa and more.
Q: Aside from necessities, what is one thing could you not go a day without?
A: Dan needs his coffee, preferably from the Moccamaster. Maris needs to see or feel sunshine, which is why we need to get away a couple of times during Minnesota winters.
Q: What piece of advice would you give your 16-year-old self?
A: Dan: You should really talk to that girl, Maris, in your class.
Maris: You should really talk to that guy, Dan, in your class.
Q: What's your favorite family tradition?
A: We’re a blended family, and family traditions are very important to us. Keeping quote lists from each of our family vacations has become a fun one because, inevitably, something funny happens on our trips and these lists help us remember them later. Example: “No one told me not to wear moon boots to Hawaii!”
Q: Is there anything you wish would come back into fashion?
A: Apparently we’ve reached an age where most things have already come back into fashion. Scrunchies, fanny packs, skinny ties, hair bows (which Maris loved wearing in high school)…they’ve all returned. It might be fun to see our kids wear Hammer pants?
Q: What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
A: Maris’ was the Rolling Stones at Jazz Fest. Dan’s was Radiohead at Radio City Music Hall (OK Computer tour).
Q: If you are outside, what are you most likely doing?
A: We spend a lot of time watching our kids play sports, especially soccer and baseball, but we also love to hike, play tennis or walk our dogs. In the summer, it’s tough to beat an afternoon out on Lake Minnetonka.
Q: If your pet could talk, what would they say?
A: Ours do talk—too much! Snickers always tells us to pay attention to him. Teddy usually tells us to ignore Snickers. And they argue over who should sneak up onto the couch when we’re not in the room.
Q: It has been said that everyone gets 15 minutes of fame. What happened during your 15 minutes?
A: Maris attended a taping of “The Ellen Degeneres Show” and Ellen danced down the aisle, grabbed Maris’ coat and wore it onstage. Dan, as Benny the Bull, won the mascot race at a Twins game, beating Louie the Loon in a photo finish.
