We’ve all felt like we didn’t fit in at some point in our lives, whether we grew up in our hometown or moved to a new country when we were 7. For Aamera Siddiqui, growing up as an immigrant in the United States was a balancing act between her Indian Muslim heritage and her American surroundings. Aamera’s world consisted of one country inside the four walls of her family’s home and another country outside those walls. Curried peas and hot dogs, Catholic school uniforms and colorful saris, Urdu and English all blended and bounced off one another to shape Aamera’s identity.

Told with honesty and humor, American as Curry Pie is one woman’s story about the conflicting perspectives that come with immigration, assimilation, and discovering what it means to be an American.

Aamera's remarkable story reflects Blake's commitment to build a Blake school community that crosses borders, bridges cultures and builds world citizens. Every member of the Blake community will see their own story reflected in the dynamic, complex mix of experiences and identities that Aamera presents. They will also see the stories of their play-date friends, lab partners, teammates, college roommates and professional colleagues as the world comes to the Twin Cities and Blake students prepare to engage with the world.

American as Curry Pie had its world premiere run at the History Theatre in March 2011.

Blake is honored to present Aamera Siddiqui, a remarkable artist, teacher and performer. Licensed teachers will receive two CEU hours for attending this event. This performance is free and open to the public. Seating is limited so please arrive early.
