Many Paths, One Community

Celebration of Community 2011 – Save the Date
Sunday, May 1, 2011
1 - 4 p.m.

Celebration of Community is a biannual event, free and open to all Blake families. Destination Stations reflecting a variety of traditions, talents, interests, and cultures are hosted by individuals, families and groups in the Blake community. This event provides the broader community with an opportunity to experience and celebrate Blake’s often multi-faceted community. It’s a special afternoon of food tastings, activities, and experiences. In 2009 attendance reached nearly 1,000, included over 30 destination stations, featured lively entertainment and generated countless conversations, but only five bags of non-compostable trash (thanks to the Blake “Green Team”).

If you’d like to get involved beyond attending, consider the following possibilities and contact Celebration of Community Co-Chairs Asta Gersovitz or Kera Messinger at

  • Host a destination station: share a family, cultural, or regional talent or tradition at the event by hosting a destination station. Your station does not have to be exotic, elaborate or complex. Stations in the past have ranged from teaching a Nepalese strategy game or making a Chinese fan, to demonstrating how to make (and eat!) potato pancakes/latkes or Jamaican grilling, to displaying the charms of the South Carolina Sea Island, Ireland, and India, to providing information about Habitat for Humanity or GSA, to live demonstrations of bee-keeping or Robotics.
  • Provide main stage entertainment:From Irish dancers to student bands to acoustic guitar players to student choirs and dancers, we are always looking for entertainment to add ambience to the celebration.
  • Help to plan the event; Student, parent and community volunteers are needed to assist with planning, preparation and execution of: event logistics, destination stations, entertainment , treasurer, decorations/signage, event hospitality, zero waste, student art projects, volunteers.
  • Volunteer to help on the day before, the day of, the day after the event: Volunteers are needed for set-up, take-down and everything in between. Help for one shift, and spend the rest of the day enjoying the festivities!
