The Blake School Support Group for parents, friends, and families of GLBTQ is based on the national model provided by the worldwide, non-profit, volunteer and community based organization known at PFLAG (Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays). PFLAG's purpose is to provide confidential help to families and friends to understand sexual orientation and gender identity while helping to raise awareness and acceptance.
The primacy of support forms the basis for the founding of Blake's Support Group and we seek to provide a safe and welcoming space for parents, friends, and family members to share, listen, explore, and no doubt wrestle with how best to support the GLBTQ people in their lives.
This group is open to any Blake family from any division (Lower, Middle and/or Upper schools).
The Mission of the Blake School Support Group for parents, friends, and families of GLBTQ has three components:
- Support: To help Blake School parents, friends, and families stay in loving relationships by helping them understand and affirm their GLBTQ members/friends.
- Education: To seek to dispel the myths and misinformation around GLBTQ people and to create a society that is respectful of human diversity by providing opportunities for dialog about sexual orientation and gender identity.
- Referral: To provide links to community resources when appropriate.
The GLBT Family Support Group will be co-facilitated by Upper School Counselor Erin Adams and JJ Kahle, Office of Equity and Community Engagement, GLBT Support and Advocacy.
