    BLAKE CLASSIC - SATURDAY, MAY 5, 2012


    Co-Chairs Susan Hitchner Fluke and Lisa Rotenberg welcome your help with the 2012 Blake Classic! The Blake Classic is the biannual all school fundraiser which provides crucial financial support to the school, and we need your support to make this a great event!
    Auction Acquisition Volunteers:
    Solicit new donors - businesses that you frequent (gift cards from retail stores and restaurants, etc) or volunteering to walk the Galleria, Wayzata, Edina, etc.
    Donate items from you, your company, your friends, or networking connections to locate donors to round out live auction packages (airline contacts, vacation homes, hotel stays, sports tickets, etc). We hope to have at least 6 live auction items-a dinner with a chef, two horse racing related trips possibly the Kentucky Derby and to Ascot in London, a wine trip, a puppy.
    Collect donations from the donors (we hope to organize this by where you live to make it efficient).
    Catalog and assist in the photographing of the donations for the on-line auction.
    Shop for and make the live auction baskets.
    Transport the auction items from the storage garage to the school.
    Proof the auction catalog.
    Distribute items after the auction from the school to the winning bidders.
    Fund-A-Need Advocates: Work with Chair to serve as ambassadors for Fund-a-Need by helping to spread the message and enlist supporters through personal contact and a mass appeal on the evening of the Classic.
    Decorations: Help stage The Derby Classic party atmosphere via set up of decorations/centerpieces the day before and/or day of the event (May 4th and 5th).
    Hospitality: Greeters to help check-in guests and facilitate with table locations the evening of the event.
    BlakeStakes and Trifecta Raffle: Help with raffle ticket sales during the reception hour of the event.
    General Blake Classic Help: If there is something you are specifically interested in signing up for now, please enter your name in box and we will keep the list going throughout the year.


    ANNUAL FUND
    Caller: Participate in solo or group phoning efforts to encourage 100% parental participation in this year’s Annual Fund. Both one-time and year-long volunteers are welcomed.

    BOOSTER CLUB
    Bearwear Sales: Work at Bearwear booths at Homecoming, Holiday Boutique, Olympic Days or other special events. This is a fun and easy one-time commitment.
    Bearwear Committee Member: Be an at-large member of the sales and marketing team. Participate in sales, design and marketing of Blake Spirit Wear. Attend monthly Booster Executive Committee meetings (second Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.)

    PARENT NEWS
    Assistant Editor: Assist editor in planning, collecting, editing and proofreading the Parent News and serve as editor in 2012-13.
    Feature Writer: Write one (or more) 750 word articles
    Copy Editor/Proofreader: Proofread one (or more) issues of Parent News.
    Faculty Profile Writer: Write one (or more) assigned Faculty Profile pieces (300-350 words), highlighting a school faculty member or administrator.

    MISCELLANEOUS OPPORTUNITIES
    Volunteer Lunch Co-Chair: Work with the Volunteer Lunch Chair and help plan (invitations, menu, and decorations) the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on May 9, 2012 for Blake volunteers. Chair the event the following year. This position is a two-year commitment.

    ADMISSIONS
    Admission Open Houses and Informational Events to Welcome Prospective Families: Volunteer opportunities during these events include greeting and registering families or giving tours of the school during the event. The Admissions Office will contact volunteers to check your availability and provide details prior to the scheduled event.

    The Blake School presently offers Upper School students an opportunity to explore interesting professions by engaging in single day, weeklong or longer informational internships hosted by Blake parents, alums and friends. The timing of these opportunities/connections can be during the academic year or summer.     LOWER SCHOOL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

    STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

    Homecoming: Help staff children’s activities for one-hour shifts from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Blake Campus.
    Pumpkin Party (grades K-5): Help staff this K-5 Fall event. Dates are as follows:
    Blake Campus: Thursday, October 27, 2011 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
    Highcroft Campus: Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
    Lunchroom Volunteer: Help supervise student lunches on Thursdays while faculty conducts meetings. Typical commitment to assist with lunch is once a month.

    FACULTY AND STAFF APPRECIATION

    Faculty and Staff Birthday Treats: Provide treats for the staff lounge one day during the school year to help celebrate faculty and staff monthly birthday observances. Distribute birthday card with a gift card to those faculty and staff with birthdays or half birthdays that fall in your assigned month. Cards will provided by the Parent Association.
    Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon: : Help with the faculty and staff appreciation luncheon (May, 2012).

    Teacher Wish List (Blake campus): Staff teacher wish list table for a 2-hour shift during the Barnes and Noble In-Store Book Sale on Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 9:00a.m. to 9:00p.m.
    New Book Volunteer at Highcroft Campus: Help with selecting new books for the Book Fair event at Highcroft campus on October 17 and 18, 2011.
    Guest Author Book Signing Volunteer at Blake Campus:  Facilitate the Guest Author's book signing and book distribution on the Hopkins Campus,  11 AM - 2PM, Thursday October 13, 2011.
    Book Exchange Volunteer (both campuses):
    Blake Campus: Assist with the collection and exchange of used books on Friday, October 14, 2011.

    Each year, parents are the key to making this day so wonderful and special – thank you! We continue to need helping hands to facilitate the logistics of moving almost 300 people to and through activities. To be successful again this year, we need YOU! If you are flexible and welcome any assignment, please check the top box.     Greeters & Guides: Welcome and help direct guests.
    Special Friends: Serve as a student’s guest for the day and participate in the various activities in the classroom.

    BLAKE CAMPUS ONLY

    Art Adventure Instructor: Participate in this art enrichment program which includes a training session for you, in-class sessions sharing art, and a field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
    Art Volunteer: Assist art teacher in displaying children’s artwork throughout the school year and for sharing programs. Flexible time. No artistic ability needed.
    Book Arts Volunteer: Help students create their own books. Dates and times TBD
    Computer Volunteer: Assist computer teacher by helping students in computer class for certain projects. Computer proficiency is not required. Please indicate day of week preference:
    Media Center Volunteer: Work one 2-3 hour shift, either morning or afternoon, every other week. Assist classrooms checking out books, help individuals find books, assist with book care and processing as needed and shelve lots and lots of books.

    HIGHCROFT CAMPUS ONLY

    JAVA Instructor: Participate in this art enrichment program which includes a training session for you, in-class sessions sharing art, and a field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
    Kindergarten Lunchroom Helper: Assist faculty in helping Kindergarten students in the lunchroom. Four to six parents are needed during the Kindergarten lunch period for the first two weeks of school. Parents with students in any grade are welcome to help the children transition to eating in the dining room.
    Girls’ Service and Activity Club (formerly Girl Scouts) Grade Leader: Lead a group of girls in fun service and educational projects. Two leaders are needed per grade. Please indicate which grade you would like to lead.

    Boys’.Exploration. Activity. Recreation. Service Club (BEARS – formerly Campfire Club): Lead a group of boys in fun service and educational projects.

    Costume Coordinator: One 4th or 5th grade parent to serve as the yearlong wardrobe helper by overseeing costumes for sewing, cleaning, etc., and keeping track of costume stock in the drama stores.
    HIGHCROFT MEDIA CENTER – Please check all areas of interest below.
    Cover the circulation desk during class checkout: Responsibilities include operating the library automation system to check out and return library materials, shelve returned materials, and assist students with locating materials. Help with one shift per month (1.5 hours). Parent volunteers needed for Kindergarten-Second grade classes. Please note that the class library schedule will not be finalized until the second week of school.
    Substitute for circulation desk: same description as above on an as needed basis.
    Morning Check-In: Check in and shelve library materials returned in the mornings. 2-4 shifts per month (20-40 minutes) after morning drop off.
    Keepers of the Order of Knowledge: Volunteers are needed to check shelves to insure that the books are in their proper order. A section of shelves will be assigned to each volunteer at the beginning of the year. Volunteers come in on their own time 2 times per month to check their section (usually takes 30-40 minutes). This is a great opportunity for Third-Fifth grade parents to spend time in the library during your child’s class time.
    Process Overdue Notices: Paula Huddy prints overdue notices every other Friday. Volunteers are needed to check shelves for those overdue materials before the notices are sent home with the students. 1-2 shifts per month. Need to be available on Friday mornings and will usually take 30-45 minutes.
    End of Year Inventory: Help scan bar codes on library materials. Need volunteers for one-hour blocks. Sign up sheet will be posted at the end of the year.
    End of Year Book Exchange: Used book exchange held at the end of May in the Highcroft Media Center.
    Set Up: Help with sorting and set up of donated books. Volunteers needed in the afternoon the Friday before book exchange begins. Takes about 1 hour.
    Book Exchange: Need volunteers for morning or afternoon shifts during the week of book exchange to help collect and sort book donations. Also help distribute and collect tickets for books. Morning shifts are 8:00-8:30a.m. and afternoon shifts are 3:20-3:50p.m.

    MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

    Chaperone: Join other parents as a chaperone at a grade level or all-grade middle school recreational or social event.

    Haunted House Committee: Assist with the annual faculty-run Haunted House on October 15, 2011.
    Set Up & Decorate: Set up and decorate the MS Dining Room for Haunted House event. Note: Actual Haunted House is set up by the faculty. The Dining Room is the entrance to the Haunted House and is used for treat and ticket sales. Saturday October 15, 3:00-5:00pm.
    Treat Donations: Donate food, beverage, or other items for sale at the Haunted House. Donations may be dropped off at the Middle School during the week before or on Saturday from 3:00-5:00pm.
    Treat and Ticket Sales: Sell treats or tickets Saturday, October 15, from 7:00-9:00pm (Volunteers are asked to be on site from 6:30-9:30pm).
    Clean Up: Many volunteers (parents and students) are needed to help faculty with clean up the following morning. Great chance to see what goes on behind the curtains. Sunday, October 16, 10:00am-12:00pm.
    Faculty and Staff Appreciation Treats: Provide breakfast treats for faculty and staff in staff lounge on Monday mornings. You will be able to choose one or more Monday mornings that work for you throughout the school year. A great way to thank the faculty and staff!
    Ski/Snowboard Day Chaperone: Join other parents chaperoning students at the annual ski/snowboard day, Friday, February 17, 2012. This is an all day event. You don't have to be a skier to be involved.
    Spring Fling: Assist Spring Fling Chair with event set-up, distribution of Dairy Queen Dilly Bars and clean-up on Friday, May 25, 2012.
    Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon:
    Lunch Committee: Help plan the luncheon to be held on June 1, 2012.
    Food Donation: Provide a salad, side dish, or dessert for the luncheon.
    Eighth Grade Party Committee: Help plan the eighth grade graduation party to be held the evening of June 6, 2012.

    MIDDLE SCHOOL MAGAZINE DRIVE
    September – October

    Order Checking: Check magazine orders and enjoy meeting other Middle School parents.
    Prize Distribution: Have fun a few mornings with the kids, passing out prizes.

    UPPER SCHOOL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

    Community of Concern (C.O.C.): Support Blake families by sharing educational information and fostering communication among parents to help prevent and reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs by Blake students.
    Assist COC chairs with two parent educational events in the fall.
    Assist student groups with Upper School social events and fall BBQ.
    Faculty/Staff Treats: Provide treats in the faculty lounge one day during the school year.
    Faculty/Staff Appreciation Event: Help with the faculty/staff appreciation event at the end of the school year.
    Upper School Fundraising Assistance: Support Jamba Juice Wednesdays and help develop a new Upper School fundraising activity or event.
    Assist Science Department Liaisons and Faculty Lab Assistants: Clean labs, wash glassware, help set up and dismantle experiments. Time commitment: about 1 hour per month. Training is provided.
    Dissection Assistants: Help with anatomy class dissections as needed, and/or 9th grade pig dissection in spring. Time commitment: about 1 hour per dissection.
    Science Experts: Share scientific expertise by speaking to classes and/or allowing students to interview, or “shadow” at work, or view on-site scientific demonstrations. Time commitment varies
    Library/Media Volunteers: Shelve circulating books; label, cover and shelve newly purchased books; ad-hoc projects. Training provided. Flexible time requirement, can be coordinated with librarians.
    All-Night Senior Graduation Party: Work with the Committee Chairs to plan the all-night Graduation Party for Seniors, which is held after the graduation ceremony in June.
