    All SCHOOL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

    CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY - SUNDAY, MAY 5, 2013
    This popular event is sponsored by the Parent Association through the All-School Diversity Council. Members of the Blake community create interactive "destination stations" or provide live entertainment which reflects an interest, experience or family tradition and share it with the community. Committee Member: Work on the committee to help plan and execute the event. Chair a sub-committee working on various aspects of the event such as: Event Logistics, Destination Station Coordination, Entertainment, Treasurer, Decorations/signage, Event Hospitality, Zero Waste Coordination, Student Art Project Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator. Hospitality
            Pre-Event: Work with sub-committee co-chairs to plan event welcome stations, including registration activity for younger event guests.
            At the Event: Help at the welcome and registration tables.
    Event Set-Up (Saturday, May 4, 2013): Help set up destination stations and entertainment areas, place signage and decorations.
    Destination Station Host: Create an interactive destination station displaying an aspect of your/your family's interest, experience, tradition or experiential background. Examples from past events include: Culture of the South Carolina Sea Islands, Namaste Nepal, LearningWorks at Blake, Family Stump Art, Blake Robotics/Bearbotics, Images of Pakistan, Jai Ho,India, Maryland Blue Crab Cracking and Tasting, Taste of Ireland, Peace Corps Experiences, Jewish Holiday Foods, African American Foods.
    Entertainment Host: Sponsor a performance piece from your cultural or experiential background. Examples from past events include: Student performance groups, Bands, Irish Dancers, Hawaiian hula dancing, American jazz, Greek dancing, gospel choir, Chinese Dance Theater, storytelling, Jamaican dub poetry, Kwanza performance. Does your child take cultural dance lessons? Suggest the company perform.

    ANNUAL FUND
    Caller: Participate in solo or group phoning efforts to encourage 100% parental participation in this year’s Annual Fund. Both one-time and year-long volunteers are welcomed.

    BOOSTER CLUB
    Bearwear Sales: Work at Bearwear booths at Homecoming, Holiday Boutique, Olympic Days or other special events. This is a fun and easy one-time commitment.
    Bearwear Committee Member: Be an at-large member of the sales and marketing team. Participate in sales, design and marketing of Blake Spirit Wear. Attend monthly Booster Executive Committee meetings (second Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.)

    PARENT NEWS
    Assistant Editor: Assist editor in planning, collecting, editing and proofreading the Parent News and serve as editor in 2013-14.
    Feature Writer: Write one (or more) 750 word articles
    Copy Editor/Proofreader: Proofread one (or more) issues of Parent News.
    Faculty Profile Writer: Write one (or more) assigned Faculty Profile pieces (300-350 words), highlighting a school faculty member or administrator.

    MISCELLANEOUS OPPORTUNITIES
    Volunteer Recognition Luncheon Co-Chair: Work with the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon Chair and help plan (invitations, menu, and decorations) the annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on May 8, 2013 for Blake volunteers. Chair the event the following year. This position is a two-year commitment.

    ADMISSIONS
    Admission Open Houses and Informational Events to Welcome Prospective Families: Volunteer opportunities during these events include greeting and registering families or giving tours of the school during the event. The Admissions Office will contact volunteers to check your availability and provide details prior to the scheduled event.

    BLAKE CONNECTIONS (US Off-Campus Student Intern Program)
    The Blake School offers Upper School students an opportunity to explore professions by engaging in single day, weeklong or longer informational internships hosted by Blake parents, alums and friends. The timing of these opportunities/connections can be during the academic year or summer. Many seniors utilize Blake Connections to fulfill their Senior Program requirements.     STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

    Homecoming: Help staff children’s activities for one-hour shifts from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the Blake Campus.
    Pumpkin Party (grades K-5): Help staff this K-5 Fall event. Dates are as follows:

    Each year, parents are the key to making this day so wonderful and special – thank you! We continue to need helping hands to facilitate the logistics of moving almost 300 people to and through activities. To be successful again this year, we need YOU! If you are flexible and welcome any assignment, please check the top box.     Greeters & Guides: Greeting guests, assisting with dismissal to classrooms, distributing take-home gifts for guests, assisting with passing time between activity periods, and serving as a child’s guest if needed.

    BLAKE CAMPUS ONLY

    Art Enrichment Program Instructor: Participate in this art enrichment program which includes a training session for you, in-class sessions sharing art, and a field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts or another local museum.
    Art Volunteer: Assist art teacher in displaying children’s artwork or helping organize art supplies in the art room on an as needed basis throughout the school year. Flexible time. No artistic ability needed.
    Book Arts Volunteer: Help students create their own books in the Book Arts Studio. Dates and times TBD
    Computer Volunteer: Assist computer teacher by helping students in computer class for certain projects. Computer proficiency is not required. Please indicate day of week preference:
    Media Center Volunteer: Work one 2-3 hour shift, either morning or afternoon, every other week. Assist classrooms checking out books, help individuals find books, assist with book care and processing as needed and shelve lots and lots of books.

    HIGHCROFT CAMPUS ONLY

    JAVA Instructor: Participate in this art enrichment program which includes a training session for you, in-class sessions sharing art, and a field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
    Kindergarten Lunchroom Helper: Assist faculty in helping Kindergarten students in the lunchroom. Four to six parents are needed during the Kindergarten lunch period for the first two weeks of school. Parents with students in any grade are welcome to help the children transition to eating in the dining room.
    Girls’ Service and Activity Club (formerly Girl Scouts) Grade Leader: Lead a group of girls in fun service and educational projects. Two leaders are needed per grade. Please indicate which grade you would like to lead.

    Boys’.Exploration. Activity. Recreation. Service Club (BEARS – formerly Campfire Club): Lead a group of boys in fun service and educational projects.

    Costume Coordinator: One 4th or 5th grade parent to serve as the yearlong wardrobe helper by overseeing costumes for sewing, cleaning, etc., and keeping track of costume stock in the drama stores.
    HIGHCROFT MEDIA CENTER – Please check all areas of interest below.
    Cover the circulation desk during class checkout: Responsibilities include operating the library automation system to check out and return library materials, shelve returned materials, and assist students with locating materials. Help with one shift per month (1.5 hours). Parent volunteers needed for Kindergarten-Second grade classes. Please note that the class library schedule will not be finalized until the second week of school.
    Substitute for circulation desk: same description as above on an as needed basis.
    Morning Check-In: Check in and shelve library materials returned in the mornings. 2-4 shifts per month (20-40 minutes) after morning drop off.
    Keepers of the Order of Knowledge: Volunteers are needed to check shelves to insure that the books are in their proper order. A section of shelves will be assigned to each volunteer at the beginning of the year. Volunteers come in on their own time 2 times per month to check their section (usually takes 30-40 minutes). This is a great opportunity for Third-Fifth grade parents to spend time in the library during your child’s class time.
    Process Overdue Notices: Paula Huddy prints overdue notices every other Friday. Volunteers are needed to check shelves for those overdue materials before the notices are sent home with the students. 1-2 shifts per month. Need to be available on Friday mornings and will usually take 30-45 minutes.
    End of Year Inventory: Help scan bar codes on library materials. Need volunteers for one-hour blocks. Sign up sheet will be posted at the end of the year.
    End of Year Book Exchange: Used book exchange held at the end of May in the Highcroft Media Center.
    Set Up: Help with sorting and set up of donated books. Volunteers needed in the afternoon the Friday before book exchange begins. Takes about 1 hour.
    Book Exchange: Need volunteers for morning or afternoon shifts during the week of book exchange to help collect and sort book donations. Also help distribute and collect tickets for books. Morning shifts are 8:00-8:30a.m. and afternoon shifts are 3:20-3:50p.m.

    Chaperone: Join other parents as a chaperone at a grade level or all-grade middle school recreational or social event.

    Haunted House Committee: Assist with the annual faculty-run Haunted House on October 27, 2012.
    Set Up & Decorate: Set up and decorate the MS Dining Room for Haunted House event. Note: Actual Haunted House is set up by the faculty. The Dining Room is the entrance to the Haunted House and is used for treat and ticket sales. Saturday October 27, 3:00-5:00pm.
    Treat Donations: Donate food, beverage, or other items for sale at the Haunted House. Donations may be dropped off at the Middle School during the week before or on Saturday from 3:00-5:00pm.
    Treat and Ticket Sales: Sell treats or tickets Saturday, October 27, from 7:00-9:00pm (Volunteers are asked to be on site from 6:30-9:30pm).
    Clean Up: Many volunteers (parents and students) are needed to help faculty with clean up the following morning. Great chance to see what goes on behind the curtains. Sunday, October 28, 10:00am-12:00pm.
    Faculty and Staff Appreciation Treats: Provide breakfast treats for faculty and staff in staff lounge on Monday mornings. You will be able to choose one or more Monday mornings that work for you throughout the school year. A great way to thank the faculty and staff!
    Ski/Snowboard Day Chaperone: Join other parents chaperoning students at the annual ski/snowboard day, Friday, February 15, 2013. This is an all day event. You don't have to be a skier to be involved.
    Advisory Olympics: Assist Advisory Olympics Chair with event set-up, distribution of Dairy Queen Dilly Bars and clean-up on Friday, May 24, 2013.
    Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon:
    Lunch Committee: Help plan the luncheon to be held on May 31, 2013.
    Food Donation: Provide a salad, side dish, or dessert for the luncheon.
    Eighth Grade Party Committee: Help plan the eighth grade graduation party to be held the evening of June 5, 2013.

    MIDDLE SCHOOL MAGAZINE DRIVE
    September – October

    Prize Distribution: Have fun with the students as they select their magazine sales prizes! Easy one or two time commitment during middle school lunch hours. Prize dates are tentatively set for Thursday, October 4th and Friday, October 12th.

    UPPER SCHOOL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

    Community of Concern (C.O.C.): Support Blake families by sharing educational information and fostering communication among parents to help prevent and reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs by our students while attending Blake events as well as off-campus gatherings. Assist COC chairs with parent educational events in the fall and spring.
    Faculty/Staff Treats: Provide treats in the faculty lounge a few times during the school year.
    Faculty/Staff Appreciation Event: Help with the faculty/staff appreciation event on Monday, June 3.
    Assist Science Department Liaisons and Faculty Lab Assistants: Clean labs, wash glassware, help set up and dismantle experiments. Time commitment: about 1 hour per month. Training is provided.
    Dissection Assistants: Help with anatomy class dissections as needed, and/or 9th grade pig dissection in spring. Time commitment: about 1 hour per dissection.
    Science Experts: Share scientific expertise by speaking to classes and/or allowing students to interview, or “shadow” at work, or view on-site scientific demonstrations. Time commitment varies
    Library/Media Volunteers: Shelve circulating books; label, cover and shelve newly purchased books; ad-hoc projects. Training provided. Flexible time requirement, can be coordinated with librarians.
    Senior Graduation Party: Work with the Committee Chairs to plan the Graduation Party for Seniors, which is held after the graduation ceremony on June 6.
