Farmer John Talks Turkey with Highcroft Diners

Snow is covering the Minnesota landscape, but Cafe Blake's Farm to School program is still bringing local foods the cafeteria tables. Recently, Farmer John Peterson, general manager of Ferndale Market, stopped by during lunch to talk turkey with Highcroft campus Lower School diners. Ferndale Market turkeys are grown in Cannon Falls, Minn., on Peterson's family farm. They've been raised with no antibiotics and processed with no additives, and during the warmer months, all of the turkeys on the farm are raised completely cage free. Peterson, who grew up on the farm then left for college and work, returned Ferndale Market in 2008.

Farmer John visited the Blake campus in November. The visit was such a success, Cafe Blake Director Nicolle Thomas invited him back, this time to the Highcroft campus. In addition to chatting with Peterson about turkeys, the students were given Farmer John trading cards and feasted on Ferndale Market's delicious turkey. Students gave Farmer John the celebrity treatment as they clamored for his autograph. An informative and delicious lunch was had by all!
