World Savvy Middle School Students Rise to the Challenge

Blake Middle School students Andreas and Asad recently competed and had great success in the World Affairs Challenge, an innovative academic program and competition on international affairs for middle and high school students. This year's theme was “6 Billion on the Move: Human Migration in a Global Society.” Asad and Andreas began researching the theme this February with their teacher Kat Stankiewicz to prepare for a formal presentation, poster and test on global migration for the competition in late April. Additionally, competitors worked in mixed, collaborative teams to pose a global solution for a current global crisis.

More than 300 students from 14 schools throughout the Twin Cities competed in the junior and senior divisions. In the junior division, Blake earned first place for Best Discovery Poster, second place for Best Overall Team, and both Andreas and Asad earned Rising Star recognition. Individually, Andreas earned the fourth highest quiz score, and Asad's Collaborative Question & Solution group earned third place.

New to the Twin Cities this year, the World Affairs Challenge is coordinated by World Savvy in San Francisco, Denver and New York. To learn more about the challenge, visit the World Savvy web site.
