The Lower School News (Elaine Hove)

At some point during the year, each fifth grader, working with a partner, is assigned a story, e.g. crayfish in third grade or peace posters in art, that they will produce into a story for that edition of The Lower School News.

First, the fifth graders go to the classrooms to film and do interviews. Next the fifth graders plan their story considering their audience and making choices about use of humor or graphics. Finally, they use iMovie software to edit their video into a finished piece. By constructing a media message for an audience, the fifth graders become more critical viewers, better able to deconstruct the many media messages that surround them in the world.
