Announcing the New Assistant Head of School
|
Incoming assistant head of school, Lucretia "Lukie" Wells and her husband Jonathon.
Blake is delighted to introduce Lucretia "Lukie" Wells, who will be joining our community as the new assistant head of school starting July 1. Wells' multitude of talents and experience across a variety of programs make her an excellent fit for Blake, ably filling the shoes of outgoing Assistant Head of School Lisa Lyle.
Coming to us from Milton Academy, a co-educational day and boarding school outside Boston, Wells currently serves as the dean of students overseeing the upper school experience for 684 students in grades nine through twelve. In this capacity, she has responsibility for the residential life, health services, discipline, advising, student leadership and student multicultural programs. Prior to her tenure at Milton, Wells worked at Darrow, George, Oregon Episcopal and Groton Schools. She has taught English, worked in admissions, coordinated summer programs and overseen the equivalent to Blake's student service programs. Wells has a masters' degree in special education from Portland State University and a bachelor's in English from Boston University.
In addition to her varied educational experience, Wells' strengths and passions directly fulfill the needs and wants of the Blake community. In particular, Blake will benefit from Wells' love of systems and enthusiasm for collaboration. (She laughs, "I am one of the few people who really enjoys committee work.") She is eager to provide leadership and join in the work of aligning and strengthening Blake's Pre-K-12 curriculum, which she views as a great opportunity.
In addition to her love of systems Wells is very much looking forward to taking up Lisa Lyle's work around faculty/staff professional development and the Effective Teaching Initiative. She enjoys working with faculty who love their craft and looks forward to building relationships and providing support throughout the School. "I am a big believer in the team approach and in the benefits of multiple eyes," Wells explains. "I am very much looking forward to this work."
While Wells has strong East Coast roots (ask her about the blended Red Sox/Yankees household of her youth) she and her husband of 16 years, Jonathon, have taught and worked throughout the country. Though their shift to the Midwest is a big one, Wells says there were many draws for her coming to Blake, including:
The community, the people on all three campuses. She comments how struck she was by the warmth of so many and the genuine caring exhibited by all throughout her visit and the numerous conversations.
The opportunity to partner with faculty and administrators to continue the work to align Blake's curriculum, Pre-K-12.
Talking with John Gulla, and the vision he articulated for the School.
