Blake Student Paper is Lone Minnesota Finalist
in National Competition

Blake's student-produced newspaper, The Spectrum, was recently named a finalist for the National Scholastic Press Association's (NSPA) highest honor, the Pacemaker award. Blake is one of 55 high school publications nationwide to receive this honor and is the only Minnesota school represented among the finalists. It has been more than five years since a Minnesota school has been a finalist for this honor. Pacemakers are selected based on the entries' coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics.

Blake seniors Ray Carlson and Jennings Grant are the 2006-07 Spectrum editors and Scott Hollander is the faculty adviser. In June, The Spectrum staff, headed by editors Carlson, Grant, Lauren Migliori '06 and Sarah Schewe '07, submitted its 2005-06 editions for the competition, which is co-sponsored by NSPA and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation. A staff of a professional newspaper in the host city of the national high school journalism convention judges the entries. This year's host city was Nashville, Tenn., and the convention was held Nov. 9-12.
