Students Give Thanks for a New and Improved Highcroft
|
It took a great many talented and energetic people to create Blake's newly renovated and expanded Highcroft campus, and on Thursday, Sept. 28 Highcroft students gathered to thank every last one of them. Lower School student representatives presented various gifts of appreciation to the school's neighbors, the architectural and construction firms, the playground builders, the financial contributors and Blake's Board of Trustees, building and grounds crew and Head of School John Gulla.
A humorous skit presented by four Highcroft faculty members illustrating the challenges faced during last year's construction drew both laughs and nods of recognition. Students and faculty joined voices in singing a new rendition of the Highcroft project anthem, "Diggin' for the Future" by music teacher Woody Woodward. The short program also included remarks by Lower School Director Beth Hower, Gulla, Trustee Sandy Donaldson, an appreciative Highcroft fifth grader and Lower School Associate Director Julie Vang. A picnic lunch followed the program.
Highcroft's expansion includes classrooms for the school's arts programs (choral, instrumental, strings, drama, movement) as well as a renovation and reconfiguration of existing spaces, which provide space for the new pre-kindergarten class, a larger, more flexible computer lab and an enlarged and updated gymnasium.
Minneapolis-based architectural firm James Dayton Design, winner of the 2006 National Young Architect and the Minnesota Young Architect Awards, led the construction of this project. Dayton is a 1983 alumnus of The Blake School and also attended Highcroft.
