Blake's New Athletic Director Brings Experience to New Experience
|
Blake's athletes are gearing up for the fall prep sports season and at the helm is the School's new athletic director, Jim Lindsay. After a 30-plus-year career with Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, during which time he served as athletics director, associate dean of admissions, science teacher and varsity football and hockey coach, Lindsay is changing his New England colors (in this case green and white) to the Blake Bear's blue and green.
In many ways the change is a dramatic one. Lindsay, a native of Pointe Claire, Quebec, has not only spent the greater part of his career at Deerfield, he is also an alumnus of the school. (He went on to receive his bachelor's degree from Concordia University in Montreal and a master's degree in exercise science from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.) But his vast experience in leading a competitive independent school's athletics program puts Lindsay on very familiar ground as he assumes Blake's athletic director position, one that became available when the School's longtime athletic director Rollie Johnson announced his retirement in February. At Deerfield, Lindsay was directly responsible for all facets of the interscholastic and athletic programs at the school, including appointing and evaluating the staff, development of programs, and budget oversight. He will have similar responsibilities at Blake, where he will also fill the role of PK-12 physical education department chair.
"The Search Advisory Committee and the many others who met Jim while he was visiting Blake were very impressed by his candid answers to questions and his knowledge of athletics and the independent school world," Head of School John Gulla said. "His love for students and the importance of education are evident in all that he does."
Lindsay, whose tenure began officially on July 1, has used the relatively quiet summer days to prepare for the busy year ahead and to familiarize himself with the School. "Blake does a wonderful job of not only promoting excellence in the athletic arena but also in introducing younger students to the simple joys of play and physical activity while imparting important lessons about teamwork and competitive spirit," Lindsay said. "My goal is to build upon this rich framework and provide the leadership and vision to guide a strong, innovative and diverse athletic and physical education program."
