Blake Students Soak Up the Iowa Caucus

Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson and other presidential hopefuls will be getting some extra help in the final days leading up to the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3. Twenty-two Blake Upper School students, lead by social studies teacher David Graham ’85, are heading down to Des Moines to volunteer for the candidate of their choice and gain some hands-on political experience in the process.

This is the second time Graham, a former Wellstone campaign staffer, is taking a group to the caucuses. In 2004, 19 Blake students made the trip. The Iowa trip is not tied to school curriculum, and students opting to make the trip do not receive class credit. Those working on campaigns and attending the caucuses are doing so out of a personal interest and, as is the case this year, are taking time from their winter break for the experience. The group consists of seven seniors, six juniors, two sophomores and seven freshmen.
