- Track your students’ progress by writing bi-weekly student comments and end-of-summer student evaluation letters.
- Conduct Family Conferences with your advisees—update families on student progress and establish goals with student.
- Supervise and be available to students throughout the day—at breakfast, passing time, lunch, Activity Time, etc.
- Serve on a committee that plans events such as Academic Olympics or Celebration.Plan All School Meeting (a time for the community to gather in order to celebrate academics, cultivate values, develop skills, and share information).
Additionally, LearningWorks Teachers all share a commitment to:
- Demonstrating leadership skills.
- Modeling respect for education and love of learning.
- Modeling appropriate conduct in an educational setting.
- Working in an open-minded, diverse community and learning from others.
- Ongoing learning and reflection about teaching methods and skills.
- Doing what it takes—no matter what it takes—to change the lives of LearningWorks students.
Teacher Qualifications
- Eligible applicants must be students enrolled as undergraduate students in post-secondary institutions or as high school juniors and seniors. Those with post-secondary degrees are not eligible for teaching positions.
- A strong candidate must be willing to take risks and initiative and must demonstrate both leadership skills and a passion for learning. Prior teaching experience is not required. All majors and all majors and interests are welcome to apply.
- Candidates must be willing to role model good public speaking skills. A wholesome sense of humor is also important.
- Since LearningWorks is a full time commitment, it is not possible to hold another job outside the program. Further, it will be nearly impossible to fulfill other commitments, such as summer school, sports, or travel. Teachers must be willing to commit fully to the program for the summer. Teachers must understand that this is a huge commitment. LearningWorks faculty will be kept extremely busy with lesson planning, grading, collaborative work, family contact, etc.
