Guidelines for Student Observations
Behavioral and Learning Child Studies
September and February

In September, focus on a child whose behavior concerns or challenges you. In February, focus on a child whose learning concerns you.

Using the attached form, record notes daily over the course of an entire week for as many times as you see this student. Use the most objective descriptors you can, avoiding interpretive/judgmental words to describe what the child does. Note what you do and jot down what questions come to mind each day. (It might be helpful to choose a child whom you see just before a break in the day to allow for note making.)

At the end of the week, spend some time reflecting on the data gathered and summarize in writing. As you reflect, consider the following:

  • How might this be connected to other things?
  • Do I know what is happening
    • at home?
    • in other school settings?
    • in settings outside of school?
  • What further information is needed?
  • Who else might be helpful to talk to about this student?
  • At what point would the parents be contacted?
  • What are next steps/strategies you might take?
