ETI for Entry Level Teachers
For those new to teaching, the learning curve is very steep. Even experienced teachers new to Blake will find they have some adjustments to make. We are eager to provide the support, professional development opportunities and feedback to help make this transition as easy as possible. In addition, we must also carefully evaluate Entry Level teachers to make sure the match between Blake and new faculty is a good one. ETI criteria help focus data gathering and efforts on those aspects of teacher practice that most directly impact student learning. The Framework provides criterion referenced performance indicators for more effective summative evaluation. To that end, the following takes place:
- During Workshop Week, Division Directors and PK-12 Department Chairs will meet with all first year Entry Level faculty members to provide them with an Entry Level Notebook and to go over the ETI materials and the Entry Level Timeline (which outlines the support new faculty members can anticipate from their division director, their department chair and their mentor, as well as expectations for observations, portfolio requirements, etc.), and to review information specific to their division. Second and third year Entry Level Teachers will continue to accumulate portfolio materials, but will not participate in a special meeting during Workshop Week.Entry-level teachers will complete a Fall Reflection and Goal Setting Form (PDF WORD) to share with their observing administrator(s).
- Over the course of the year, Entry Level faculty members will work closely with their mentors and will observe – and be observed by – them. Division Directors and Department Chairs (at the US and MS) will conduct formal observations that will include the use of the Instructional Planning and Reflection Form (PDF WORD).
- At the end of the first semester and at the end of the school year, Entry Level faculty will meet with their Division Director and Assistant Director (LS) or Department Chair (US and MS) to talk about how things are going. Prior to the end of year meeting, Entry Level faculty members will complete and submit the Enhanced Spring Reflection and Discussion Form (PDF WORD). Following the end of year meeting, the Division Director will write a performance review based in part on ETI criteria. The teacher will sign off on this evaluation, write a response if s/he would like to, and the evaluation (and response if provided) will be placed in the teacher’s permanent file.
- During their third year, at the end of the first semester, the Entry Level faculty will complete and submit the Entry Level: Year Three Culminating Reflection/Discussion Form (PDF WORD) and discuss it with their appropriate Divisional administrator. Following this meeting, the Division Director will write a performance review based in part on ETI criteria. The teacher will sign off on this evaluation, write a response if s/he would like to, and the evaluation (and response if provided) will be placed in the teacher’s permanent file. At the end of the year, the faculty member may be expected to fill out a Spring Reflection Form and submit it to their Divisional Director.
