ETI

Overview

At Blake, we recognize that over the course of a career, all teachers benefit from annual goal-setting, reflection about their practice, peer observation and feedback, student and/or parent feedback, frequent conversations about teaching, professional development and written administrative feedback. We have adopted and modified materials developed by Charlotte Danielson at ETS to help us focus our data-gathering, feedback and professional development resources on those aspects of teacher practice that research indicates correlate most highly to improved student learning. Our Effective Teaching Initiative incorporates many elements of our long-standing and highly successful Professional Development Program (PDP) and represents a full-scale effort to support the growth of all teachers at various stages of their careers and at various levels of performance. Numerous support documents, forms and professional development resources can be found in this section of the Blake web site.

We recognize that teachers have different needs at various times in their professional lives. To that end, we have developed three programs to support growth and allow for differentiated support and evaluation for three groups of teachers:

  1. ETI for Experienced Faculty

    1. Annual Program
    2. Enhanced Performance Review (once every 3 years)
  2. ETI for Entry Level Faculty (in their first 3 years at Blake)
  3. ETI for Experienced Faculty on Probation

All faculty are expected to pursue professional development opportunities that help them better achieve their professional goals. Faculty members at Blake enjoy access to many different opportunities for professional development, from those offered in Summer Academies, to divisional workshops and those supported by their Divisional Professional Development Fund. In addition, teachers are invited to apply for Technology Grants, Plank Fund for Teachers Grants, as well as Donaldson and Hersey Sabbaticals, for support for professional development of their own design that will help them become better teachers.
