The Power of 1 Caring Adult and 1 Motivated Student

Did you ever spend time as a high school student wondering how you would find the right career and the actual working opportunity itself? Wouldn't you have appreciated having the chance to gain meaningful career-oriented work experience while exploring undergraduate schools and potential majors?
Blake Connections is a new intern program the School has designed to give juniors and seniors working opportunities provided by current Blake parents and alums. The program complements Blake's mission and core values by encouraging students to branch out in the world through exposure and experience in new environments.
For some time, the Alumni Association and members of the Parent Association have sought a way to bring valuable mentor opportunities to those Upper School students who are making important life decisions. Together with Blake's Off-Campus Programs Director Dion Crushshon, they have created Blake Connections to accomplish the goal. Through Blake Connections, willing sponsors are matched with intern applicants to provide a work experience in a variety of fields. The time commitment and involvement in such intern opportunities can range from shadowing a professional for a day or more, providing a two-week internship to correspond with a student's school breaks, or an entire summer work experience. Another logical time is during the three-week senior project in the spring. All mentors are welcome. Intern opportunities could include anything from architectural design to fashion design, law to law enforcement, media to manufacturing, biotech to info tech, arts to public service, education to government. The possibilities are as broad as our community itself.
We encourage parents of juniors and seniors to promote Blake Connections at home. Providing an opportunity to help students experience a larger part of our world is an invaluable gift. Students may find their passion or identify a career direction that may not be right for them. The importance of this program lies in the range of intern experiences that Blake Connections can provide. What is better than sampling career life in a safe, nurturing and life-enhancing environment? Please consider whether you, as parents, have something to offer our juniors and seniors from your time, talents and experiences. We welcome your participation. Your own children will be part of the intern applicant pool, and you may want them to experience this opportunity.
