Blake Runners Excel At State

Blake School’s girls cross country team placed third in the state Class A meet Saturday morning at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
The Blake boys team added a 10th-place state finish and had the individual state runner-up, senior captain Dylan Cater.
For the girls team, the success was not unexpected. The Bears were ranked in the state’s top five in the coaches’ poll all season.
It was a tight race for the girls team title as Glencoe-Silver Lake won with 111 points. Staples-Motley was second with 121 and Blake was third with 137. Perham (150) and Becker (152) rounded out the top five.
Sophomore Katharine Chute of the Bears took third place overall with a 4K time of 14 minutes, 34 seconds. Another sophomore, Claire Richardson, finished fourth in 14:35.
Eighth-grader Margaret Chute was Blake’s third finisher in eighth place with a time of 14:49.
Rounding out the Blake team were Shaina Rud, Sophie Fritz, Clare Zutz and Hilary Hayssen.
Other girls who contributed to Blake’s success throughout the season are Cherie Meyer, Elizabeth Schneider, Elle Peterson, Annalisa Andre, Tess Vertin, Brittany Hubert, Gina Ferrara, Kyndal Hargrow, Lea Dessi-Olive, Sydney Robbins, Tara Dubbs, Anya Haas, Allison Reid and Kathryn Dasburg.
Cater led the Blake boys with a 5K time of 16:23 and finished 14 seconds behind Class A champion Mike Torchia of Rochester Lourdes.
Eveleth-Gilbert ran away with the state boys title, scoring 94 points. Perham was second with 146 and LaCrescent finished third with 158. Blake’s score was 228.
David Upjohn was Blake’s second finisher in 64th place.
Other runners in the lineup for the boys team were Zach Bjork, Max Fritz, Peter Ankeny, Michael Lee and Andy Johnson.
Blake head coach Gary Lee said, “Our goals were to perform well at the end of the season, to have fun and to improve personally, whether you’re on varsity or not. If this happens, it is a successful season no matter what happens in the meets.”
