The most obvious change in the Blake School volleyball program this fall is the presence of a new head coach, Karl Katzenberger.
Although he is new to the Blake program, Katzenberger has eight years of experience at the high school and club levels. Most recently, he coached as an assistant at Wayzata High School. Last summer, he was head coach of the Club Tonka Elite 16s Junior Olympic team.
Katzenberger inherits a young team. He has three seniors and two juniors.
“We hope to be competitive in the Tri-Metro Conference this year, and especially in years to come,” Katzenberger said. “I have been pleased to meet all of the families in the Blake program, and the athletic staff at the school. My main goal is to create a constructive and competitive environment to ensure a positive experience for everyone involved in the program.”
Lisa Perkins and Susie Lipinski are Blake’s senior captains. They will play prominent roles along with senior Maria Pyle and juniors Michael Johnson and Natalie Nash.
Young players on varsity are sophomores Peta Hinds and Maggie Ryan, and ninth-graders Lucy Litman and Kayleigh Britain.
Coaches assisting Katzenberger are John McKeown and David Martin.
“We will have a training-oriented program at the junior varsity level,” Katzenberger said. “David will coach the JV-A and JV-B teams. We have 12 ladies in the ninth-grade class, who have earned a place in the program this year.”
The Bears will play host to a tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Blake’s Hopkins campus gym.
Girls swimming
In six years as head girls swimming coach at Blake School, Kris Rosenberg has a dual-meet record of 48-5 and three conference championships.
The Bears have also won five section titles in that span.
With a successful program in place, Rosenberg is looking forward to another winning season this fall.
The Bears are led by senior co-captains Caitlin Cronk and Hannah Leigh.
Lizzie Aby, Berit Johnson and Sara Lannin return after winning all-state honors last season. They were all-conference along with four more Bear returnees – Emma Bruggeman, Jennings Grant, Kelly Maslow and Marit Wangstad.
Despite all of the experience, Rosenberg said there are still key positions to fill.
Sophomore Emma Bruggeman is looking to move up in the ranks in diving.
In addition to Rosenberg, Blake’s coaching staff includes assistant Christy Wagner and diving coach Patrick Mahoney.
The Bears are looking forward to participating in the conference relays at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Blake’s Hopkins campus pool.
