Blake Girls Win Class A Track and Field Title

By Matt Thomas

Even a cold and windy day at Hamline University couldn't keep the Blake girls' track and field team from feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

The Bears took the Class A title by edging Litchfield, thanks mostly to strong performances by juniors Laura Komarek and Claire Richardson.

Komarek recorded 20 of the Bears' 52 points with a first-place finish in the shot put and a third-place showing in the discus throw.

Komarek's mark of 40 feet, six and a half inches in the shot put placed her four inches ahead of the mark set by Victoria Harren, of Melrose Area High School.

The junior came within seven feet of sweeping the throwing events, as her mark of 123 feet, four inches in the discus throw put her behind Laura Hubmer of St. Clair and Christa Landmark of International Falls.

Richardson also had a strong meet in the distance running events. Richardson placed second in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:05.

Richardson also placed fifth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:09.58. Holy Family Catholic senior Bria Wetsch won both events by considerable margins.

Junior Kyndal Hargrow was the other individual to score points for the Bears as she took fifth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.20.

Hargrow was also a part of the Bears' 4x400-meter relay team that took fourth place. The other three members of that team were Alisha Reynolds, Clare Zutz and Mary Angela Curran.

Reynolds and Zutz also were a part of the Bears' 4x100-meter relay team that also took fourth place. Freshmen Theresa Ford and Rachel Neil completed that relay team.
