Beth Davis Heads to Haverford

The Blake School senior Beth Davis has committed to attend Haverford College and play both soccer and softball for the Fords. Haverford College is a private, coeducational, liberal arts college located in Haverford, PA. The college is known for its academic excellence and is consistently rated as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country.
Haverford is a member of the Centennial Conference, an NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic conference. The Centennial Conference encourages athletic competition among national liberal arts colleges and universities that share similar academic aspirations and a commitment to the importance of the total educational experience of students engaged in sports. Current members include Dickinson College, Franklin & Marshall College, Gettysburg College, Haverford College, McDaniel College, Muhlenberg College, Swarthmore College, Ursinus College, Washington College.
Of her college selection Davis reflects, "Sports have been such an influential part of my life that I wanted them to continue past Blake and into college. At Haverford I will have the opportunity to play soccer and softball competitively, but without the overwhelming stress of a DI program. It was such a blessing for me to find a school that not only was a perfect fit academically and environmentally, but also where the coaches of the two sports I love were both interested in having me play."
Next fall, Wendy Smith will enter her 15th season at the helm of the Fords women's soccer program. A 1987 Haverford alumna, she was instrumental in the establishment of the College's first women's soccer varsity in 1985. That year, and again in 1986, she earned first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors as the team's leading scorer. In 1995, as the head coach of the women's soccer team, Smith led the Fords to their first Centennial Conference championship. The 2006 Fords complied a 4-5-1 Centennial Conference record and a 5-9-3 over all mark.
A recent graduate of Haverford, Jen Ward enters her third year as a head coach and looks to build on the momentum her team created in 2006. Under her direction the Fords have celebrated unprecedented success. Ward led her squad to a Centennial Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament in 2006 and last season marked the first-ever winning season in program history.
Beth Davis was a Cum Laude scholar as a junior and has carried a 3.85+ grade point as a senior. Davis, a great example of a successful Blake student-athlete says, "As soon as we walked onto the campus I was in love with the school. It's a lot smaller than most other DIII schools, but that's one aspect that I really like about Blake. I like living in an environment where you know your neighbor and there's a greater sense of community." Beth continues, "I have loved my sports and Blake and I will always remember them, but I'm so excited to get out to Philadelphia and continue growing as a player and student."
