The Blake School girls' softball team is preparing for another exciting season. The Bears were 15-7 in 2005 and 4th in the Tri-Metro Conference.
Head coach Clara Just returns for her fifth season as a Bear and is joined by first year varsity assistant Nat Wagner.
Leading the Bears this year will be senior co-captains Michael Johnson and Alyssa Saunders.
Michael Johnson (SS) is a three-time all-conference selection and 2005 All-State selection. She is a five-year starter who is moving from third to shortstop for her final season.
Coach Just sizes up Johnson, “Michael is a standout athlete that has progressively improved her knowledge of the game, she is like having another coach in the starting lineup.”
Alyssa Saunders (P) is also a three-time all-conference selection and a member of the 2005 All-State Honorable Mention team. Saunders , another fifth year starter was 11-7 record with a 1.75 ERA, 99 Ks, 27 BBs in 2005.
Coach Just describes Saunders, “Alyssa has taken the mound for the Bears for the past four years, starting as an 8th grader. In her senior year, Alyssa will once again be the center of the Bears game plan. She is a poised and polished athlete who will carry the workload for the Bears pitching staff for one final year.”
Two gifted, seasoned juniors will join Johnson and Saunders.
First sacker Beth Davis hit .406 with 24 runs and 17 RBI on her way to the 2005 All Tri-Metro team. Davis is a leadoff hitter with lightening speed and a soft glove around first.
Two time honorable mention all conference selection Laura Waldman could be the most versatile player on the Bears roster. Laura moves to her natural position of catcher this year, after starting at first base as a freshman and SS for her sophomore year.
Captain Michael Johnson sizes up her team, “Our team is pretty young. There are only four starting upper classmen. We, as a team, need to work on our chemistry, and getting to know each other is the key.” Michael continues, “Our team as a whole is athletic, smart, and eager to get better. I believe we are going to catch on quickly, and become more comfortable with each other as we practice more. This will be a great season and we are going to learn a lot from each other.”
