Blake School’s girls swimming and diving team used the newly renovated pool on Blake’s Hopkins campus for the first time, and the dedication was successful with a 99-87 victory over Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

The Bears have one of the state’s most competitive 200-yard medley relay teams with four top suburban swimmers – Sara Lannin from Edina in backstroke, Jennings Grant from Orono in breaststroke, Berit Johnson from Wayzata in the butterfly and Chelsea McGuire of Wayzata in the freestyle.

That foursome got Blake off to a great start with a first place in the meet with BSM. The Bears swam what would be a state-qualifying time.

Kerrie Meskimen of BSM won the 200 freestyle, edging Blake eighth-grader Kelly Grant.

Lizzy Aby placed first for the Bears in the 200 individual medley.

Emma Bruggeman, Blake’s top diver, finished first in the meet with BSM.

McGuire gave Blake another key first place in the 100 freestyle.

Blake came up big to win the 200 free relay with the team of Johnson, Kelly Maslow, Grant and McGuire.

Grant came back to win the 100 breaststroke.

Prior to the win over BSM, Blake won the Tri-Metro Conference relay meet. The Bears edged Cretin-Derham Hall 42-40.
