Emily Moos Named Athena Award Winner

Emily Moos

Emily MoosThe Blake School senior Emily Moos has been named the school's 2008 Athena Award winner. The Athena Award is given annually to a senior for outstanding athletic and academic achievement. The award is named after the mythical Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom and skill, who was invincible and possessed the gifts of dignity, power, and youth.

Moos is a talented tri-sport athlete. She excels in soccer, Nordic skiing, and lacrosse. Moos has earned 14 varsity letters during her career at The Blake School and has been a captain in three different sports.

Moos will attend Colby College in Waterville, Maine this fall. Founded in 1813, Colby is the 12th oldest independent liberal arts college in the nation. When asked about her college choice Moos stated, "I chose Colby because of the size, location, and academics. It's a small school which I really like, and Maine is a beautiful state."

Moos began her athletic career in soccer as an eighth grader where she went on to earn five varsity letters and a number of Tri-Metro conference and All-State awards. As a senior captain, she led her team to a section championship and second place finish in the Minnesota State High School League State Tournament. Girls' Varsity Soccer Coach Paul Menge stated that, "Emily is the quintessential center midfielder, sweeping behind the ball on support, distributing great passes, switching the field, then switching it again. Her passion, desire to win, and heart are as much a part of her leadership as captain on the field as was her exceptional play."

During the winter, Moos participated in Nordic skiing where she earned four varsity letters, was captain her senior year and earned several Tri-Metro conference awards. She made an individual state tournament appearance in her junior season and in her senior season earned top skier honors.

In lacrosse, Moos was also elected captain of the varsity team for her senior season. At the culmination of her career she will have earned five varsity letters. Her teams have also competed in the state tournament three years running.

Beyond athletics, as a senior Moos was chosen to be a member of the Student InterAction Committee (SIAC). Moos stated, "It's a group that is supposed to help bring the school closer together and to promote school spirit." Moos says that she will most likely study education at Colby while playing soccer and possibly lacrosse.

The Blake School congratulates Emily Moos on her academic and athletic achievements!
