It is with great pride that The Blake School Athletic Department announces that head girls’ lacrosse coach Debra Wood won her 100th career game on April 12th with a 14-7 victory over the Robbinsdale Cooper Hawks. Debra has accrued a record of 100-10-3 as a varsity coach at Blake.
Many people have read that lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. The sport has grown over 43% nationally in the past five years and the growth in Minnesota is even more impressive. In the same period, youth lacrosse (grades 3-7) in Minnesota has increased over 200%. While the member schools of the Northcentral Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association (NSLA) has grown from 3 teams in 1999 to over 40 teams today. The Blake School started its girls’ lacrosse program 12 years ago.
Wood joined Blake Faculty in 1994 and started the lacrosse program that spring with 10 players. The Blake School was the first Minnesota school to grant girls’ lacrosse varsity status and Wood’s program joined MSHSL in 2002; the first year girls’ lacrosse became a High School League sanctioned sport.
Before arriving at Blake Debra coached varsity girls’ lacrosse at the Andrews School in Willoughby, OH and at Sewickley Academy near Pittsburg PA. During her tenure in Pennsylvania Wood also officiated lacrosse at the high school and collegiate levels.
Debra Wood is a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College, a coed, four-year, private liberal arts college about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh, PA where she played field hockey and she earned her M.A. at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.
Debra has been lauded for her coaching skills. She has received The Blake School’s Pete Parks Coaching Award in 2001, was honored as NSLA Coach of the Year 2001 and was selected to coach in the 2005 Minnesota All Star game.
Another impressive note is that while at Blake Debra has coached 11 All Americans and more importantly, 38 academic All American girls’ lacrosse players.
When asked about her coaching experience at Blake and this accomplishment Debra acknowledged that, “This 100th win represents the combined efforts of a hundred players and their willingness to work hard to continue to build the winning tradition at Blake. It has been one the most rewarding experiences of my life to be able to share my love of this game with so many players at Blake and throughout the state of Minnesota.”
Congratulations to Debra, her staff and her players on the occasion of this milestone.
