The Blake girls’ hockey team won their first Schwan Cup Blue Division Championship in a battle of the top ranked teams in Class A. #1 Blake edged out #2 Warroad 4-2 in an evenly played game. Blake skated out to a quick lead in the first period with goals by Junior Sally Komarek and Freshman Hillary Crowe, but Warroad fought back to even the game 2-2 early in the third period. Junior Hilary Hayssen scored the winning goal at 10:03 of the third period and Freshman Alyssa Veil added an insurance goal on an empty net with 22 seconds left to play.
On their way to the championship game, Blake blanked Eagan 5-0 in the semi-finals fueled by a hat-trick by Junior Margaret Chute and some excellent goaltending by Senior Kaitlin Gallagher. Eagan out shot Blake 30-24, all 30 saves credited to Gallagher. In the opening round, Blake overtook Irondale 4-2 with two goals and two assists from Komarek.
Both Blake and Warroad had been vying for their first Schwan Cup Blue Division Championship. In 2006, Blake lost to Benilde St. Margaret 6-2 in the blue division championship and Warroad finished third in the red division. Blake is now a four-time Schwan Cup Champion winning the blue division in 2007, red division in 2003, green division in 2001, and white division in 2000.
