On Monday, October 29 the 2007-2008 edition of The Blake Girls Hockey team hit the ice for this years first organized winter sports practice. Coach Stankovsky is returning for his 10th season as head coach of The Blake School Bears. While guiding the Bears, Stankovsky has compiled a record of 189-48-9. Also returning are veteran assistant Keith Radloff (6th year), Casey Oie (3rd year) and new Blake assistant Bryan Carlson, who has 10 years of varsity level experience at Eden Prairie. Blake also has two new Junior Varsity coaches Jim Van Dusartz and Gene Billadeau.
The 2007 Class A State Champion Blake Bears will continue to have a young team this year that is led by three seniors and six juniors but is returning fourteen lettermen. Returning on this years squad are All State Margaret Chute and Sally Komarek, and All Conference honorable mention Samantha Butters and Sara Cole.
Blake is led by two senior captains, Samantha Butters and Kate Dasburg.
Other returning letter winners include Olivia Rotenberg, Michelle Tremblay, Andrea Foss, Courtney Randolph, Gina Abrego, Abbie Lund, Alyssa Veil, Chloe Billadeau and Hillary Hayssen. This year's team will also feature four first time varsity players at Blake, including two eighth graders. New first time Blake players are: Addie Adams, Kate Gallagher, Hillary Crowe, Allie Austin and Morgan Oie.
A strong tradition, speed, and strong work ethic will be the signature of the 2007-2008 Bears as they try to defend their State Title and Tri-Metro crown, and begin the quest to return to the State Tournament this February. Coach Stankovsky acknowledges that this version of Bears will have to be very hard working and disciplined.
The Bears posted a 26-4-0 record last season against some of the best teams in the state, while scoring 152 goals for a 5.06 average and giving up 34 goals for a 1.13 average per contest. The Bears should continue to have some firepower but will have to be a better defensive team this coming year.
