Chute Chooses Crimson

Katharine Chute

Katharine ChuteThe Blake School senior Katharine Chute has committed to attend Harvard University and play ice hockey for the Crimson. Harvard, a private, four-year liberal arts institution is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.

Harvard is a member of the Ivy League, an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic conference. The Ivy League achieves national success at the Division I level by approaching athletics as a key part of the student's regular undergraduate experience: with rigorous academic standards, the nation's highest four-year graduation rates, and without athletics scholarships. Current members include Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania and Yale University.

Blake Bear head coach Brano Stankovsky says of Chute's decision, "I couldn't be more thrilled or excited by the choice Katharine Chute has made to attend Harvard. Not only has she again made a commitment to challenge herself academically by attending one of the finest schools in the country but also in athletics, as she will be competing and playing with a perennial favorite and with one of the finest women's programs and coaching staffs in the nation. She continues to be an inspiration to all who seek excellence in themselves."

The Crimson is coached by Katey Stone, one of the most accomplished coaches in all of women's collegiate ice hockey. Stone, a 1989 graduate if the University of New Hampshire, has lead Harvard University to an incredible 268-124-19 record in her 13 years behind the bench and to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.

Harvard posted 23-8-2 in 2006-2007 and missed a bid for the NCAA "Frozen Four" when they lost a heartbreaker to the eventual National Champion Wisconsin Badgers in four overtimes.

Anyone who knows Katharine grasps the irony of her becoming Crimson. One needs only mention one of her many accomplishment to her and Chute's face transforms into a blushing shade of red. It has been fortunate for the Blake Bears, and now the Harvard Crimson that Katharine has spent the lion's share of her career in a constant state of rosiness.

This past winter Katharine Chute became the most honored hockey player in the storied history of The Blake School. Chute won a coveted trifecta of Minnesota hockey awards; she was named the Minneapolis Star Tribune's Metro Player of the Year, Let's Play Hockey's Ms. Hockey and was honored as the AP's Player of the Year.

These major awards are supported by an already impressive list of "hockey hardware". Chute has been named to the Class A All Tournament team, five All Tri-Metro Conference teams, two time Most Valuable Forward, two time Most Valuable Player, a two-time recipient of the High School Hobey Baker Award, a four-time winner of the Bill Marton 110% Award, and has garnered All State honors two times and Academic All State lauds as a senior.

On the ice Katharine is extremely gifted. The senior forward and captain has skated regular shifts for five seasons on The Blake School's varsity squad and is the sole remaining player from the 2003 State Championship team. Katharine has scored 115 goals and 111 assists, for a total of 226 points, that's an average of 1.6 points for every game of her prep career. Chute is also one of the best penalty killers in the state having scored 16 shorthanded goals in her career at Blake.

Off the ice, Katharine Chute is a National Merit Scholarship finalist and 2006 Cum Laude Society member who ranked second in state and fourth nationally in the Concours National De Francais Level 5A French exam. Katharine's community service activities include: member of Blake's Student Interaction Committee and has volunteered as a worker and coordinator of the Spring Lake Restoration project.
