|
On Monday, October 30 the 2006-2007 edition of The Blake Girls Hockey team hit the ice for this years first organized winter sports practice. Coach Stankovsky is returning for his 9th season as head coach of The Blake School Bears. While guiding the Bears, Stankovsky has compiled a record of 162-45-10. Also returning are veteran assistant Peter Brownlee (7th year), Keith Radloff (6th year), Casey Oie (3rd year) and Blake hockey alum Claire Goldsmith (4th year).
The Blake School has a young team this year that is led by four seniors and two juniors while returning only10 lettermen. Returning on this years squad are All State and last years leading scorer Katharine Chute, and All Conference goaltender Rachel Bowens-Rubin, All Conference honorable mention Laura Komarek, Margaret Chute and Sally Komarek.
Blake is led by three senior captains, Katharine Chute, Laura Komarek and Julia Heffelfinger.
Other returning letter winners include Sally Komarek, Margaret Chute, Samantha Butters, Rachel Bowens Ruben, Sara Cole, Katie Dasburg and Hillary Hayssen. This year's team will also feature eight first time varsity players at Blake, including three eighth graders. New first time Blake players are: Andrea Foss, Courtney Randolph, Gina Abrego, Olivia Rotenberg, Michelle Tremblay, Abbie Lund, Alyssa Veil and Chloe Billadeau.
A strong tradition, speed and good work ethic will be the signature of the 2006-2007 Bears as they try to defend their Tri-Metro crown and return to the State Tournament this February. Coach Stankovsky acknowledges that this version of Bears will have to be very hard working and disciplined. The Blake School was knocked out this past season in section play by Farmington in an exciting game that was decided in overtime.
The Bears posted a 20-5-2 record last season against some of the best teams in the state, while scoring 134 goals for a 4.96 average and giving up 47 goals for a 1.67 average per contest. The Bears should continue to have some firepower but will have to be a better defensive team this coming year.
