New Coach Hopes to Help Blake to Top of Conference

Whenever there is a coaching change in high school sports, it brings about feelings of excitement as well as uncertainty. For new Blake girls’ golf coach Bryan Skavnak, that is the case, but in a good way.

Skavnak comes to Blake as a PGA professional who runs a golf school in Plymouth. He is a pro at several courses in the metro area and brings extensive knowledge and experience of the game to the team.

“I am very excited to bring my knowledge to a team that already has a strong group of players and am looking forward to helping the girls improve,” Skavnak said.

The team returns all its players from last year and will be led by captains Lindsay Melloh and Sydney Robbins. Both are all-conference players who have four years of varsity experience and are entering their second years as captains.

Also returning are senior Cathy Demos, junior Kate Gordon and sophomore Paige Esterkin.

“As a team, we are going to focus on consistency around the green this year,” said Melloh. “In the past we have been really strong off the tee, but fell apart more around the hole. We’ll challenge ourselves with more drills and practices in order to get into a rhythm.”

The team’s main competition for the conference title should be Visitation and Minnehaha Academy.

“We have great team dynamics and didn’t lose anybody from last year, so we have a really strong base and are looking forward to a fun and exciting season,” said Melloh.
