Week in Review - Week 8
Two wins needed: two wins gained!
|
After having Tuesday off, which meant over a week had elapsed since the Bears' last game, Breck came to visit the Den. Here is a squad that has presented some challenges in years past. This night seemed to follow that form, BUT the outcome would be different!
There is an obvious anxiety when this team is our opponent. Despite the many turnovers, we had a four point half time lead. More of the same in the second half, but the defense held on, and the win was ours! Claire Goebel - 2 for 2 from the free throw line, 6 for 7 from the field, gaining 14 points - and Avery Brown - 5 boards, a blocked shot, and 5 for 8 from the floor, having 12 points - lead the way. For the guards, Rachel Neil went down with an ankle sprain (the other ankle), but Mary Angela Curran stepped up and kept things rolling.
It was a night where we had two fourth grade "super fans" and a night where (hopefully) a new tradition has begun (pictures on the High School League web site).
Along came Saturday and the "Carnival in the Den." And along came Saint Paul Academy for the rematch of a week and half ago. This time the Bears would prevail. It was a little "hit or miss" for a while, but a super run created by the defense opened the game up, and we never looked back. Both Avery and Mary Angela followed up the previous night's performance with an even better one. Avery had 9 boards, a steal, an assist, and went 1 for 1 from the free throw line, along with 5 of 7 from the floor for 11 points. Mary Angela had 4 boards - from mainly the point guard position - a steal, an assist, and went 6 for 11 from the free throw line, along with 4 of 6 from the field, leading the team with 14 points! We are now 5 and 5 in the conference, heading into the second round of play.
Sectional play is coming soon as we just received the seeding information. It is an exciting time; let's keep going!
Have a good week,
Coach Heinecke
