Week in Review - Week 11

"The pain of discipline is far easier to handle
than the pain of regret"
--Paul Tiska

A good week, despite injury and illness...and another birthday. Our wishes go out to Rachel Engel: hope it was a good day!

So the Bears went to "the island" on Tuesday to face #3AAA De La Salle. There is good reason they are a top team in the state. Besides a stretch where we did not box out, it was a pretty good contest. What was for sure was the intensity; we definitely "played up" to the level of competition. The defense has made some great strides.

Then on Thursday, the Panthers of P.A.C.T. Charter came for the Bears' last home game. Lacking some posts, along with a slow start, the half time score was 29-23, a little too close for comfort. Coming out of the break, more intensity followed and the two remaining posts - Avery Brown and Kaylee Britain - made a definite impact. Avery ended the game with 11 points, going 5 for 9 from the field, and grabbing 9 boards. Kaylee grabbed 8 boards herself and scored all 5 of her points in the second half, helping establish a lead that we did not surrender. (Thanks, Celia Davis, again for some good pictures seen on the High School League site!)

Finally, Saturday was our annual Free Throw-a-Thon (with the B Squad shooting their throws on Friday). I would like to thank all those who participated and raised money and those that donated to the program. We greatly appreciate the support! Of the 1,300 shots we took that day, we made 954 (73.4%) - 8 players at 75% or higher! The top two were seniors Mary Angela Curran with 87 and Beth Davis with 82. Way to go!

Seeding is this week, and it looks as if we have earned the 5th of 9 seeds. We will travel to Rockford on Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00 for a rematch of the first round of the Minneapolis Edison Tournament this last December.

But not to get ahead of ourselves: Brooklyn Center is on Friday with this upcoming Tuesday's game at rival Breck. We are working very hard to end the season strong, accepting our roles and playing "together!"

Have a good week,
Coach Heinecke
