2005-2006 Girls' Basketball Preview
|
This is an exciting time for The Blake School Girls’ Basketball program. For the first time in the program’s history the Bears will field three teams supported by a total of 29 girls. The advantage of having three teams is that each girl is afforded more playing time and this added experience will help strengthen the Bears program.
The Bears are optimistic about the ’05-’06 season. Returning varsity players will add leadership qualities that this team exemplifies, while the new younger players will add depth to improve the program. This year’s team is lead by guard Melissa Davis and forward Michael Johnson, both seniors, and junior guard Mary Angela Curran. Their leadership and constant support have been positive influences for the entire team. Other returning varsity players who will contribute include juniors Avery Brown, Jess Owens and Beth Davis, and sophomores Sarah Hoops and Claire Goebel.
The Bears have also retooled their coaching staff. The 05-06 season marks the return of head coach Kathy Sandven from maternity leave. Rob Hoops returns for his sophomore campaign at The Blake School and will serve as Sandven’s varsity assistant while third year staff member John McNair will staffs the newly formed Freshman team. New to Sandven’s staff are first year coaches Kelly and Erin Fitzpatrick. Savvy Tri-Metro fans will recognize the names of Fitzpatrick sisters. They are graduates of Saint Agnes and lead the Aggies in volleyball, basketball and softball. Kelly and Erin will focus on the JV team.
Coach Sandven is enthused about the upcoming year and she states, “We are excited to be back on the court. We know we have a lot of work ahead of us as we further our skills and learn to play as a team. With hard work, patience and persistence, we expect to have a successful year.”
