Bears Take Second in State!

The Bears fell to the Mounds Park Academy for the second straight year in the MSHSL Championship match.
The Bears topped Thief River Falls (6-1) in the first round and Waseca High School (6-1) in the semifinals to reach the finals.
The Panthers earned their way to the championship match by defeating Saint Paul Academy and Summit School 5-2 in the opening round and Litchfield High School 6-1 in the semifinals.
Defending singles champion senior Nick Lebedoff got The Blake School on the scoreboard first with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the #1 singles spot and it ended up as the only Bear victory of the day.
The Bears lost some very close matches. Seventh grader Ford Traff lost a three setter at #4 singles as did the #3 doubles team of Trent Palmberg (10)/Charlie Velie (7).
The toughest loss of the day may have been at #1 doubles when the team of Merritt Jackley (11)/Will Hancock (11) dropped a third-set tie-breaker ), 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4).

Individual Tournament results
Blake juniors Will Hancock & Merritt Jackley fell to eventual champions seniors, Justin Peterson & Jean Francois David in the State Class A semi's. This loss foiled Hancock's chance for a repeat. Hancock and Jackley disposed of Crookston seniors Kirby Johnson and Derek Kaiser by a score of~6-3, 6-3 to capture third place at the 2006 Individual tournament held at Northwest Athletic Club, Burnsville.
Bear's senior Nick Lebedoff earned his trip to the finals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over sophomore Ian Hansen of Lac Qui Parle/Dawson-Boyd~in the opening round of the 2006 Individual tournament. In the quarter-finals Lebedoff ran into a real buzz-saw and had to survive a tie-break set to defeat senior Justin Pyle of Thief River Falls 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) and again with sophomore David Croonquist of Mounds Park Academy 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in the semifinals. Ultimately, Lebedoff defended his 2005 Minnesota State High School League individual title with a 6-4, 6-4 win over senior Max Busch of the Marshall School, of Duluth.
