2006 Boys' Lacrosse Preview
|
The Blake Bears Boys’ Lacrosse team is looking strong again in 2006. After capping off the 2005 season with a 15-0 record and the team's first state championship, the Bears look as strong as ever.
Considering the Bears graduated only three players off last year's squad and each returning player has picked up an off season of experience, skill and strength depth should be one of the hallmarks for the 2006 Blake squad.
Nine returning players participated in the summer Elite program of which five are headed off to play college lacrosse. Matt Dooley (12, defense) is headed to Haverford, David Jadin (12, defense) committed to Goucher this week, Johnny Alden (12 defense) is headed to Denison, Bryant Johnson (12, midfielder) will play at RPI, and Michael Policinski (12, defense) plans to play both hockey and lacrosse at Colby. Owen Holm (12, attack) hasn't ruled out playing both hockey and lacrosse at Williams. Senior captain Michael Cathcart is off to play football at the University of Wisconsin.
Sixth year head coach Hank Marotske is excited about the depth, experience and youth of this team. While the team will graduate 11 seniors, there is a stockpile of younger talent just waiting to get their chance. Second year co-head coach Joe Seivold feels the team demonstrates the potential to defend its state crown, but knows, as the team does, that to do so will require hard work and diligent focus.
Coach Seivold organized a spring trip for the team to Durham, North Carolina. The Blake Bears took 37 athletes of all ability levels and played four great games. Unofficially the Bears went 3-1 in scrimmages where playing time was equally distributed for all 37 players. The highlight of the trip was an 11-7 win over Coach Seivold's old school, Durham Academy.
Coach Marotske concludes, "We have to work hard every day, take each practice one at a time and each game one at a time. Looking too far forward will be our worst enemy and we can't take anything for granted.”
