“Second place” is how coach Bruce Archibald described the Blake boys’ golf team’s season a year ago.
The team finished second in the conference, second in several tournaments and second in sections. Often, the team fell victim to rival Minnehaha Academy.
“We beat them a couple times during the season, but they beat us more,” said Archibald. “All in all, it’s a great back and forth rivalry.”
This year, the team is hoping to move up from its second place status.
The Bears will be led by tri-captains Dan Rowe, B.J. Wangensteen and Will Teddy. Rowe and Wangensteen are seniors, while Teddy is a junior. All three were among the team’s top six players last year.
“Rowe is a complete player with good control who just loves the game,” said Archibald. “Wangensteen is a strong, improving player and Teddy, who was all-conference last year, is just a pleasure to watch play.”
Seniors Jamie Leathers and Ryan Rosoff and all-conference sophomore Jack Barnes also are expected to contribute.
Leathers played for Blake for the first time last season and is also a hockey player.
The team will again be using Minikahda as its home course.
“We have a nice, even group of players who all play steady,” said Archibald. “We really can compete with anybody — we have no superstars, but have consistent play across the board.”
He added, “We have several goals: First to get the most out of our games, then to win the conference and finally to advance to state.”
